Mathematics

Our school loves to use mathematics and we integrate it with Science, Technology and Engineering.  Our blog page details a full list of the mathematics activities in which we engage to complete the steps in the SFI requirements.

Requirements:

1 Children using Maths skills and knowledge as part of STEM or other activities such as baking or gardening.

2 Use Mathematics to record and analyse your science investigation results where appropriate.

Maths in action

Senior infants have been using non-standard units of measurement to measure things in their classroom.  First class students are using maths based games to explore number.  Sixth class students are exploring ways by which one might measure different parts of the school.

Analysing Science Results

Fourth classes created graphs to represent the sugar content in different drinks.  They also used slow motion videos to record the speed and distance travelled by a number of their parachutes.  Sixth class students used graphs to represent their experiments on the most effective type of bubble makers.

Other Activities

1. Maths games in Senior infants exploring number.

2. Exploring shape and space using concrete materials and seeing where these shapes are found in the local environment.

3.  Using concrete materials and non-standard units of measurement to discover the length and width of items in our school.

4.  Recording the milliliters absorbed by kitchen paper.

5. Graphing the results of sugar content explorations.

6. Graphing the characteristics of classmates.

7. Creating bar charts to show the number of sweets in a Smarties box.

8.  Measuring the distance travelled by airplanes launched from the balcony.

9.  Finding the average speed of a parachute falling from balcony.

10. Looking at the weight of classroom items.
